Lip piercings are a type of body piercing that penetrates the lips or, more generally, the area neighbouring the lips. The lips and neighbouring areas can be pierced in a range of ways. Lip piercings can be placed anywhere around the mouth, but typically the surface of the lip is not pierced. Piercings in particular positions have detailed names:

Lip Ring, Labret, Vertical Labret, Horizontal Lip Piercing, Lowbret, Vertical Lowbret, Lip Plates, Madonna/Monroe, Monroe, Medusa, Snakebites. Lip piercings are practiced by several peoples, the most well known of which are certain African tribes, who wear large ornamental plates or discs, usually in the lower lip. In contemporary society, lip piercings are relatively common piercings, especially amongst young people. Most lip piercings heal fairly quickly, although extra care ought to be taken during the remedial progression as food and liquids come into contact with the lip piercings. When the lip is pierced, a larger ring or labret stud can be put in to allow for swelling. This can be changed to a smaller ring or stud when the swelling eventually goes down. Most lip piercings have the would-be potential to damage teeth and gums if appropriate jewellery is not worn. Labret piercings can result in gum damage over time. Using an iodine solution will facilitate the prevention of infection. A homemade salt solution is the best way to heal a lip piercing. Combine 1/8 salt to 1 cup of warm water. This solution can be used to rinse out the mouth after eating and to soak the outside of the piercing using a cotton ball.
